The actual distribution of Super Bowls since 1967 tells a different story. Here's what domes really deliver โ and what they don't.

Early reports indicate the 2026 Super Bowl in San Francisco is generating less excitement than typical. Why?

This matters for Chicago. Even California โ with mild weather and a famous metro area โ struggles to generate Super Bowl excitement.

Super Bowl economic impact claims typically range from $300 million to $500 million.

Independent economists (not those commissioned by host committees) consistently find:

Even accepting inflated impact claims, a Super Bowl is a one-week event that might happen every 20 years.
At $500 million claimed impact every 20 years, that's $25 million per year โ a fraction of the $855 million+ being requested for "infrastructure."
Minneapolis case study
The promise
Minnesota was promised Super Bowl hosting as part of the U.S. Bank Stadium deal. The $498 million public investment was partially justified by future Super Bowl revenue.
The delivery
Super Bowl LII was hosted in Minneapolis in February 2018.

The gap
Minneapolis hosted its first Super Bowl in 1992 (Metrodome). Its second was 2018 (U.S. Bank Stadium). Twenty-six years between Super Bowls.
If Chicago follows the same pattern, a Super Bowl in 2031 (if it happens) would be followed by... maybe another in 2055?
Other "dome events" reality
Final Four
The NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four is held in dome stadiums. But Indianapolis has cornered this market โ the NCAA is headquartered there, and they've built relationships over decades.
Other dome cities occasionally host (Atlanta, New Orleans, Phoenix), but it's not a guaranteed rotation.
Even with a dome, Chicago could expect Final Four hosting maybe every decade.
World Cup
FIFA requires specific stadium configurations for World Cup matches. The 2026 World Cup will use stadiums across North America, with most US venues being outdoor.

Concerts
Major stadium tours prefer outdoor summer shows. Acoustics are better. The experience is different.

The Super Bowl promise is marketing. The numbers don't support it.
