Bad Acoustics, One-Hit Venue
Major artists won't play a Hammond stadium twice under an ETFE roof. And they won't choose it in the first place when Chicago offers three better outdoor alternatives in the same season.

The modern NFL stadium is a concert venue first, a football stadium second. Artists tour North America in the summer. Outdoor venues are the premium product โ no logistics, no noise complaints, natural amphitheater acoustics.
Chicago has proven outdoor concert venues. Soldier Field. Wrigley Field. And the Chicago Fire's new stadium, which recently broke ground, will be another outdoor option when it opens. Both Soldier Field and Wrigley have track records spanning decades. The Fire's new venue will have a proven outdoor design when it's operational.
A Hammond venue with an ETFE roof would compete against all three โ and lose.
Summer Routing: Why Outdoor Is the Default
Touring artists don't want to play indoors in July and August. Climate-controlled indoor venues make sense November through March. In summer, you play outdoors. The economics work. The logistics work. The sound works.
If a major artist is booking North America in the summer of 2030, here's what their agent sees:
Chicago market: - Soldier Field (lakefront, iconic, outdoor, 61,000 capacity) - Wrigley Field (historic ballpark, outdoor, mixed-use venue, 40,000 for concerts) - Chicago Fire Stadium (new, under construction, outdoor when complete)
Hammond option: - Hammond stadium (new, indoor-outdoor hybrid with ETFE roof, 61,000 capacity, 25 miles outside the city)
The artist's routing would work like this: Book Soldier Field or Wrigley. Maybe both, if the market is big enough. Then move to the next major city. No reason to add a second Chicago date in a suburb. The economic model doesn't exist.
And if Soldier Field is no longer an option?
They book Wrigley or the Fire Stadium. The Chicago market doesn't become "Soldier Field in Hammond." It becomes "one of the other venues that are actually in the city."
The ETFE Problem: Acoustics Kill Repeat Bookings
But there's a deeper issue. Assume an artist does play the Hammond venue โ maybe they're contractually obligated to hit the Midwest, or maybe the tour routing forces it. What happens?
They won't come back.
ETFE is acoustically transparent. That means it reflects sound instead of absorbing it. Venues with ETFE design elements experience elevated noise levels and acoustic reflections โ the sound bounces instead of dissipating. Add crowd roar and you get feedback loops that require expensive acoustic treatments to mitigate.
Translation: The artist's sound mix goes muddy. The crowd noise bounces off the roof and creates feedback hell. The sound engineer pulls their hair out trying to compensate with expensive treatments bolted onto the roof. The artist finishes the show thinking, "Never again."
Compare to Soldier Field, which has been hosting concerts since the 1990s. Built-in acoustics from the structure. No feedback issues. Sound travels cleanly from stage to crowd and dissipates. The artist walks away thinking, "Great venue. Let's come back."
An artist who plays the Hammond ETFE stadium once and deals with acoustic headaches will route around it the next tour. They'll pick Wrigley or head to the Fire Stadium or skip Chicago entirely. One booking. That's the lifetime value of a new stadium with an ETFE roof.
The Structural Irony
Soldier Field has hosted world-class concerts for decades because it was built to last. The stone columns, the open upper deck, the natural materials โ they create an environment where sound behaves like it's supposed to.
An ETFE roof is supposed to be "the future." But the future turns out to be a plastic membrane that bounces sound like a basketball court. You can add acoustic treatments, sure. But you're retrofitting a solution to a problem that wouldn't exist if the building were designed right in the first place.
A Hammond stadium wouldn't just be competing with Soldier Field for concerts. It would be losing to Soldier Field on the very thing that makes outdoor venues work: acoustics.
The Real Economics
An artist considering Chicago for a summer 2030 tour wants the venue with the best combination of:
1. Location โ accessible to fans, integrated into the city 2. Capacity โ enough seats to justify the setup 3. Acoustics โ clean sound, no mixing headaches 4. History โ reputation matters in the touring market
Soldier Field has all four. A Hammond ETFE stadium has capacity and maybe location (if you squint). It loses on acoustics and history. And it loses on competition โ why play Hammond when Wrigley is eight miles away in the city?
The concert revenue that supposedly justifies a new stadium? It doesn't materialize if the new stadium has worse acoustics than the one you're abandoning.
The 25-Year View
ETFE roofs have never been tested for more than 25 years. No real-world data beyond that window. In 2050, when the ETFE starts to degrade or need replacement, the Hammond stadium won't have had 25 years of concert history to show for it. Soldier Field will have had 100+ years. One is a venue with a future. The other is an expensive experiment.
Artists book venues with proven track records. Soldier Field is a proven track record. Hammond is a bet on unproven materials, unproven acoustics, and a location outside the city where concerts aren't routed anyway.
Conclusion
The concert argument for a new stadium in Hammond doesn't survive contact with reality.
Chicago's summer concert market is outdoor-focused. Soldier Field is the premium venue. Adding a second venue 25 miles away with acoustic problems doesn't double the market โ it fractures it. The artist books Soldier Field (or Wrigley, or the Fire Stadium), plays one show in the city, and moves on. The Hammond venue gets passed over because it's not in the tour routing and because its acoustics are demonstrably worse.
If the Bears are moving to Hammond because they think they'll become a concert destination, they're making an error based on not understanding how the touring market works. And if they're moving for other reasons but telling the public it's because of concert revenue, they're not being honest.
Soldier Field will still host concerts in 2050. The ETFE roof in Hammond will still be unproven.
